The Gun Debate

US Constitution

Scalia Law commemorated Constitution Day on September 12 with a webinar featuring two Second Amendment experts who discussed the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen. The law school welcomed Darrell A. H. Miller, Melvin G. Shimm Professor of Law at Duke University School of Law, and Amy Swearer, Legal Fellow, Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at The Heritage Foundation.

Bruen held that New York’s proper-cause requirement for obtaining an unrestricted license to carry a concealed firearm violated the Fourteenth Amendment because it prevented law-abiding citizens with ordinary self-defense needs from exercising their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.
