Biographical Sketch
John M. Yun is an Associate Professor of Law and an economist who specializes in research at the nexus of antitrust, intellectual property rights, data, and privacy. More broadly, he conducts scholarship in the fields of law & economics, industrial organization, and law & technology—especially as it relates to network effects, multisided platforms, and digital markets. He regularly teaches courses in antitrust, law & economics, and intellectual property.
He publishes widely in law reviews such as the Arizona State Law Journal, George Washington Law Review, Houston Law Review, University of Pennsylvania Journal of Business Law, and the Yale Journal on Regulation Bulletin, as well as economics journals—including the International Review of Law & Economics, International Journal of Industrial Organization, Review of Industrial Organization, and Economic Inquiry. He also publishes in antitrust journals such as the Antitrust Law Journal, Journal of Antitrust Enforcement, and the Journal of Competition Law & Economics. His work has led to invited submissions or appearances before the U.S. Senate Judiciary, Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy, and Consumer Rights as well as the U.S. House Judiciary Committee. He has been asked to speak at competition agency events including at the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, Brazil’s Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE), Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), and Mexico’s Federal Economic Competition Commission (COFECE). His research was cited by the Economic Sciences Prize Committee of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in the Scientific Background for the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize in 2014: Jean Tirole.
Beyond the university, through the law school centers, he has taught economic concepts, law & economics, and antitrust to federal judges, state judges, state attorneys general, state solicitors general, law professors, EU judges, and foreign competition officials. He has been featured in prominent media outlets such as Voice of America, Knowledge@Wharton, the ABA’s Our Curious Amalgam, and Yahoo Finance, and has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal.
Prior to joining the faculty at GMU, he was an Acting Deputy Assistant Director in the Bureau of Economics, Antitrust Division, at the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC). He has also taught economics at Georgetown University, Emory University, and Georgia Tech. He holds a BA in economics from the University of California, Los Angeles and a PhD in economics from Emory University.
